“I remembered a Valentine’s banquet that we held a few years ago in Blount County,” says Kelly Cunningham, who helped organize the event. “That was such a great night that I always wanted to have one again.”
Team Leaders, YOKE Folk and even some Future Folk got together to plan and host the event at First Baptist Church of Maryville. Five other local churches, Rio Revolution, Broadway Baptist, Mt. Lebanon Baptist, Piney Grove Baptist and Marble Hill Baptist helped sponsor the event. In addition to a homemade spaghetti dinner, the kids enjoyed worship, games, skits and a photo booth. Alcoa team leader Lisa James got community businesses to donate more than 100 door prizes and dessert was provided by a former YOKE kid, KupKatie’s KupKakes.
More than 70 people (including 68 middle school students!) attended the event. Some of the kids’ families came and stayed and many of our regular club kids brought friends.
“I truly believe this event was a success because people who love Jesus came together with a common goal – to show middle school students how much they are loved by our great God,” said Cunningham.
YOKE has after school programs at Alcoa, Carpenters, Coulter Grove, Eagleton, Heritage, and Union Grove in Blount County. For more information on getting plugged in as a kid or a volunteer, contact Eli Cockrum by email or phone at 865-522-6907.
